A series of photos depicting William Terra's 1:20 scale model of the Graf Spee battleship, which he captains himself to the  fortissimo and pianissimo strains of `Vagner', came to me via an e-mail from a friend with the subject line: "Mainer gone overboard." Indeed, Mr. Terra, who I am still tracking down, did go overboard with his construction of his own battleship, which he pilots himself. Word is his neighbors don't mess with him. The photos tell the story, but here's the statistics on the vessel as I currently know them.
-- John Dodge, DN Editor-in-Chief

Ship Model: Admiral Graf Spee (1:20 Scale)
Built by: William Terra of Maine
Kit Manufacturer: Scratch Build

  • The model is scratch-built like a canoe using 1-ft x 4-ft bass wood strips and then covered with fiberglass.
  • Estimated weight: 700 lbs
  • Beam is 52 inches (it said ft, but I doubt it)
  • Length is about 30 ft
  • It can carry two persons
  • The model is powered by a 15-hp outboard engine under rear gun turret
  • It can sail 15 mph
  • Furthermore, the model has a built-in music system.
  • The Commander-in-Chief in the photographs below is William Terra.
  • While William Terra cruises the lakes of Maine he enjoys listen to Wagner (How appropriate ... ).
  • William Terra would like to see more models built in this scale.
  • Construction time: Four years (so far). It is estimated to require at least two more years of work to make the model complete .
