The DARPA Urban Challenge is perhaps the world's most lucrative technology demonstration, offering a huge cash prize. Virginia Tech's entry in the autonomous vehicle race takes a different approach to the inherently analog task of driving. "All our sensors are digital and they tap into the CANbus," says team leader Dennis Hong. He does note that dc-to-dc converters from V-Infinity transform the NiMH batteries 300V output to 48V. A range of sensors also converted incoming analog signals into digital data sent to the network, highlighting the increased integration in sensors.
