Siemens PLM Software Unifies PLM Suite with TeamCenter Upgrade

Teamcenter 2007 leverages SOA and a common code base and database structure to deliver a fully integrated system

Beth Stackpole, Contributing Editor -- Design News, November 5, 2007

After multiple acquisitions and years of pledging to deliver a unified Product Lifecycle Management architecture, Siemens PLM Software is finally making good on its promise with the release of Teamcenter 2007, its first major upgrade to the platform since 2005.

UGS Teamcenter 2007 leverages a complete service-oriented architecture (SOA), common code base and common database structure to deliver an integrated system rather than prior releases that were more akin to an integrated suite of applications, according to a UGS spokesman. “It's been a three-phase journey,” the spokesman says, “but we're now delivering on our promise of a unified architecture.”

The other major focus of the 2007 upgrade is lowering the total cost of ownership related to implementing a PLM system. The new release includes a series of user interface enhancements and new features aimed at simplifying and accelerating software deployment while also streamlining collaboration. In that vein, Teamcenter's new Business Modeler Integrated Development Environment (BMIDE) allows IT folks charged with administering PLM systems to configure the software via a series of wizards and modeling tools rather than doing custom programming, as well as rapidly deploying changes to remotes sites through implementation templates and live server synchronization.

“In the past, customization and schema changes required writing custom code,” the Siemens PLM Software spokesman says. “With this, you simply model the changes, press a button and the application generates the code.”

Users will also feel at home with Teamcenter thanks to its new Outlook-like user interface. The upgrade has been designed to simplify Bill-of-Material management with new tools to visualize and browse complex product relationships, as well as aligning design BOMs with business BOMs.

Additionally, Teamcenter 2007 includes a sprinkling of new features to each of its integrated modules, including compliance, requirements management, mechatronics, manufacturing process management, portfolio program management and engineering process management, among several others.

Siemens says it's maintaining a co-existence strategy with the new release, meaning users can opt to do a complete version upgrade to Teamcenter 2007 or move to specific modules when they're ready.

TI’s DM355 includes an integrated video processing subsystem, an MPEG-4-JPEG co-processor (MJCP) and an ARM processing core with peripherals.

Light Matters: A High-Performance, "No-Compromise" Solid State Lamp?
First, let's define "no-compromise". In an ideal configuration, this lamp would use a high-brightness LED (HBLED) that is built into a small, integrated package, and is able to produce a large quantity of focused light, operate with a high level of reliability and generate no audible noise. Is this difficult? Yes, but it is possible.
