GE Ecomagination’s Green Products and Services

Rob Spiegel, Contributing Editor -- Design News, July 16, 2007

General Electric launched its ecomagination initiative in May 2005 as part of the company’s commitment to build innovative, environmentally friendly technologies. GE has now delivered 45 energy-efficient and environmentally friendly products and services. In the transportation area, GE has developed the world’s first hybrid locomotive in partnership with Union Pacific. The locomotive is capable of recycling thermal energy as stored power in on-board batteries.

GE also produced the Homebuilder Program that offers a package of energy-efficient appliances, lighting, advanced building design and even an “energy-efficient” mortgage from GE Commercial Finance. The company is also working with Los Angeles on a wind energy system expected to eventually meet the energy needs of 120,000 residents. Other ecomagination programs include smarter lighting for Wal-Mart, seawater desalination in California and green entertainment policies at NBC.
