EcoLEDs’ Light Bulbs Get Brighter

Rob Spiegel, Contributing Editor -- Design News, July 16, 2007

EcoLEDs.com introduced what it calls “the brightest LED light bulb ever made available to consumers in the United States.” Using just 10W and a single LED component made in the U.S., the EcoLEDs’ light uses just 1/10th the electricity of an incandescent light bulb, thus reducing CO2 emissions by 9,070 lb over its life.

Incandescent lights are falling out of favor because of their energy waste. Australia has banned incandescent bulbs and California is considering a statewide ban.

Fluorescent lights have gained in popularity for their energy savings, but they come with recycling challenges due to their mercury content. LED lights are environmentally attractive because they save energy and are easy to recycle. But they cost more. Advocates of LED lights argue the bulbs repay their high cost through energy savings in one to two years.
