Heart Analysis Made Easy
Terry Costlow, Contributing Editor -- Design News, June 4, 2007
Home health care is making dramatic strides. Lechnologies Research Inc. offers an AfibAlert atrial fibrillation monitor that lets patients with heart issues quickly and easily decide whether they need to contact their doctor. The handheld unit records and analyzes heart rhythm data. After a 45-sec test, a red or green light tells patients if they need to transmit data to a physician for further analysis. A Blackfin BF533 from Analog Devices performs computations and helps keep power consumption low, so batteries only need to be changed every six months. The chip also makes it possible to update the software algorithm the AfibAlert uses to analyze the patient’s heart data.
