Fluid power products emphasize miniaturization and simplified operation

Design News Staff -- Design News, November 20, 2006

Fluid power suppliers are responding to the trend of smaller product designs with more miniaturized solutions, and products offering improved corrosion-resistance and simpler operation.

“We are seeing more miniaturization of products and interest in corrosion-resistant products where, in the past, most of these applications used pneumatic, compressed air,” says Mike Donati, vice president of sales and marketing for Beswick Engineering. He says there is an increasing concern about corrosion resistance and leaking because many more customers are running fluids other than air such as helium, hydrogen or solvents through them.

The goal is smaller product footprints, offerings in stainless-steel that are more resistant to corrosive media and new techniques that make products simpler to use.

Compact, High-Pressure Pressure Transducer

The 3100 Series pressure transducer from Setra Systems provides a small footprint, less than 1 inch in diameter, and all stainless-steel construction makes the transducer resistant to corrosive media. The unit uses highly accurate thin film technology and a custom designed ASIC to offer accuracy to 0.25 percent full-scale, long-term stability of 0.1 percent/year and thermal stability accurate to within 1.0 percent/100F over the entire compensated temperature range of -40 to 250F. It can be configured to avoid extra costs associated with customization and offers pressure ranges from 100 to 30,000 psi, a wide variety of outputs, pressure fittings (NPT, UNF, BSP and metric) and electrical connectors (M12, Packard, Deutsch and DIN43650C).

Ultra-miniature M3 Threaded Quick Disconnects

A new ultra-miniature M3 threaded, quick-disconnect assembly from Beswick Engineering is comprised of a brass internal end and a stainless-steel external end. The entire assembly weighs only 3.4g. The internal end is designed with an automatic shut-off valve and an M3 internal thread. It is 16.7 mm long and has a 6 mm hexagonal body. The external end is designed with an M3 external thread and includes a captured O-ring seal for leak-tight connection. It is only about 11 mm long and has a 5 mm hexagonal body. The new M3 threaded quick disconnects are designed and manufactured for applications where space, leak-tightness, durability and light weight are required.

Push-Fit High-Performance Tube Fitting

New Phastite tube fittings from Parker Instrumentation are assembled using a simple push-fit operation, and provide permanent connections for fluid systems operating at up to 20,000 psi/1,379 bar. For permanent connections at elevated pressures, systems would typically use welded or “cone-and-thread-style” fittings. The Phastite fittings employ a compression assembly principle using a toothed profile to make the seal. Fittings are supplied as one-piece components. To make a joint, the user inserts the tube and pushes the collar along the fitting body until it reaches a dead stop using a handheld hydraulic tool. This approach contrasts with performing a 360-degree weld around the circumference of a tube.
