Advanced high-strength steels can be welded or bonded — if you know how

As their name suggests, Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) have useful tensile properties — including yield strengths in excess of 550 MPa. But these steels may require some special treatment when it comes to welding. "AHSS is sensitive to heat input," according to Adrian Elliott, a body structure researcher for Ford Motor Co. and one of the presenters at this year's Great Designs in Steel Seminar. Sponsored by the American Iron & Steel Institute, the seminar covered a collection of welding and joining technologies suitable for AHSS.
