Broadband Videophone
By Design News Staff -- Design News, December 5, 2005
Taking advantage of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) without a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or computer requires a sophisticated videophone. Packet8's videophone delivers delay-free audio and up to 30 frames per second video quality on a five-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) screen while capturing the user's image with a high-quality charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. The unit operates without a computer because of its own built-in digital computing capability. Designing video, audio or networking for new applications with field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) provides digital performance with reduced time-to-market, flexibility, and low cost. A Xilinx Spartan-3 Development Kit from Avnet Design Services provides the platform to easily develop and test designs targeted for the lowest cost per gate and lowest cost per I/O FPGA.
