Here on Design News, we are big on recognition. Actually some people think it's just our excuse to have lots of big parties, but the truth is that we love to recognize engineers who do great things.
For over 20 years, Design News, in partnership with many important and forward-thinking companies, has been the proud sponsor of the Design News Engineering Awards Program. Throughout the years, we have honored some of the best and brightest engineers on the planet—including Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar, Inventor and Entrepreneur Dean Kamen, and Composite Material Pioneer Burt Rutan. We've also recognized scores of companies for coming up with some of the best and hottest new technologies that help engineers do their jobs better and faster.
This year, we have renamed the program. We think the new name, "The Design News Golden Mousetrap Awards" gives a more specific nod to engineering achievement, has way more appeal to it, and, frankly, the awards are going to be a whole lot cooler. But though the name has changed, the spirit and goals remain the same: To recognize design engineers in a big way.
The deadlines to submit your entries for this year's Golden Mousetrap Awards are coming up quickly.
If you design products used by engineers, we invite you to tell us about the most amazing new product you've designed in the past year. Just go to www.designnews.com/mousetrap for the entry form and full contest rules. Get your entry in by December 15, 2005, and we'll make sure it gets into the hands of our highly competent judges—the other engineers who read our magazine and use your stuff. If you win, we'll profile your product along with other great new products in the Design News Special Engineering Awards issue in March 2006. This year, we've increased your chances of winning with more subcategories in computer hard-ware/software, electronics/test and measurement, materials, and motion control/automation.
Also new this year is our Golden Mousetrap Readers Choice Awards. We're asking you, our readers, to help us honor the companies that supply the best technical products and services to design engineers. We'd love to know what companies you think have the best websites, the best delivery times, and a whole lot of other things that help make life easier for you.
And we've made it super easy for you to nominate the companies you think outperform their competition: Just turn to the entry form in this issue on page 75. You can either fill it out and fax the form back to us, or vote online at www.designnews.com/mousetrap. Either way, you'll automatically be entered into a drawing for a $500 gift certificate.
Not a bad chunk of change in your Xmas stocking this year and a great way to help us recognize engineering!
