Record-setting steel production

World crude steel production for the 63 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute stood at an estimated 80.1 million metric tons (mmt) in December. Global production increased by 7.7 percent compared to December 2002 and by 6.7 percent year-to-date. Chinese production of crude steel stood at 20.2 mmt in December. This is 28.7 percent higher than for the same month in 2002. YTD production in China reached a record 220.1 mmt, and worldwide production reached a record 945.1 mmt in 2003.
