Grant supports sonic metal welding
By Design News Staff -- Design News, September 22, 2003
Sonobond Ultrasonics Inc. has been awarded a $441,000 grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Advanced Technology Program. The project, sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, is part of a $9-million, three-year research effort to develop ultrasonic metal welding technology suitable for the mass production of aluminum car bodies. With some development work, ultrasonic welding could serve as low-cost, environmentally friendly, lightweight alternative to resistance welding, friction stir welding, or riveting.
