Collaboration Offerings Grow

OneSpace.net hits the streets in September

Paul E. Teague -- Design News, August 18, 2003

Chuck Jonkosky, e-business director for CDI Engineering Solutions, thinks he has found a way to get rid of the headache of creating and integrating custom solutions that help him manage design projects. After looking at CoCreate's new

OneSpace.net collaboration software, he says it could provide his customers with real-time visibility into the status of their engineering projects, regardless of discipline, CAD system, or location.

OneSpace.net, scheduled for release in September, is the latest of several collaboration tools to help engineers manage documents, projects, and work more closely with subcontractors and customers. PTC, EDS PLM Solutions, and Dassault Systemes, among others, have their own collaboration product suites.

CoCreate built its OneSpace.net product on Microsoft.NET technology, and promises users a secure project workspace, a meeting center for conducting web meetings, application sharing and instant messaging, markup tools, a decision and task tracker, and a 3D model explorer for evaluating product-design alternatives.

John Alpine, R&D director at CoCreate, says the company did a lot of research about what drives collaboration before finalizing the product. Among the findings: Engineers are too busy fighting fires to learn a lot of new software, and IT groups don't want proprietary applications. Armed with that information, CoCreate concentrated on focusing its new collaboration tool on engineering, making it convenient, and making it affordable ($995 list price, or $120/month for a hosted version). The product is easily deployable, says Ken Versprille, research director at market analyst and research firm D. H. Brown, Inc.

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
