Design News for Mechanical and Design Engineers

Whoa—let's not get too carried away here!

Truth be told, this scenario is all too familiar. Many gifted engineers receive precious little recognition for their brilliant work—much less any financial reward.

We at Design News don't think that's right. That's one reason why we hold our annual Excellence in Design competition. This will be the 23^rd consecutive year that we invite engineers to submit their best designs and be in the running for some fabulous prizes.

Part of the Design News Engineering Awards Program, the Excellence in Design contest honors engineers for their innovative design work. You are automatically eligible to enter if you have developed a product this year that establishes a whole new product/technology category or significantly advances an existing one. Patents help, but aren't mandatory.

It's incredibly easy to enter. Just fill out the entry form on page 50 of this issue, or download an electronic version at www.designnews.com (click on "contests" button). The more completely you can describe the general operating principles of the product, its significance to the marketplace, the underlying engineering principles applied, and the challenges you faced in your design efforts, the better your chances of winning.

If you're lucky enough to be one of the top three winners, you will receive a $6,000 cash prize, thanks to the generous and longstanding support of MSC.Software. You will also travel to Chicago in March 2003, courtesy of Design News, to attend our Engineering Awards Banquet. You'll share the stage with other engineering luminaries.

So if you think you have something that will blow the socks off our judges, don't delay—the deadline for entries this year is September 13, 2002.
