StarLight is a new international high-speed optical-fiber network connection that operates at speeds up to 2.5 gigabits per second. Even higher speeds are expected this spring. StarLight is a stable, high-speed link for testing hardware reliability and other advanced scientific work from both public and private information-technology clients. "It's still in the experimental phase," says University of Illinois Engineering Writer Paul Francuch. The connection point is operated jointly by the University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, and Argonne National Laboratory. Funding comes from the National Science Foundation.
