Cable packs in performance

EYEOPENER® 2-mm cable assemblies from W.L. Gore & Associates offer high bandwidth, distances up to 50m, and high signal density from being packaged in smaller diameter cables. The latter is no detriment to signal fidelity and reliability, according to Engineering Product Manager Frank Traino. "The use of ePTFE high-dielectric strength material allows putting a standard gauge conductor in a smaller diameter cable. And in addition, with the proprietary conductor material composition, there is more bandwidth for a given distance or the same bandwidth over a longer distance," he explains. The effect is a gain of about two gauge sizes from a signal loss perspective, says Traino—i.e. a 26 AWG size with 24-gauge performance. The cable assemblies can provide up to 2.5 Gbits/sec data transmission and 200 single-ended signals into 50 linear millimeters of backplane space when using VHDM™ 8 × 25 Column Cable Headers.

Media converters bring Ethernet to factory

The FL MC fiber-optic media converters from Phoenix Contact are designed to ease implementation of fiber optics on the factory floor.

The devices adapt an Ethernet 10BASE-T interface to polymer or glass fiber-optic technology. Industrial benefits include EMI/RFI immunity, long-distance, high-speed transmission, and surge protection. Crucial converter features, according to Product Specialist Pat McCurdy, are "packaging that keys on isolation of power supply and data circuits and surge protection on the 'copper side,' facilitating taking the office environment into the industrial." The 22.5-mm wide converters are DIN-rail mountable and available in two variants. For distances up to 400m, a quick-connect field-installation technology can be used with 200/230 µm hard-clad silica (HCS) fiber. For longer distances, an FL MC version uses ST connectors and glass fiber. The converters can be used independently or integrated with the company's modular Ethernet hubs and switches. Onboard diagnostics monitor copper and fiber connections and cabling.

Connector takes copper to 10 Gbits/sec

Connector-X™ from Winchester Electronics, a Northrop Grumman Component Technologies unit, is a one-piece compression-mount interconnect with a transmission rate up to 10 Gbits/sec. The connector thus extends the use of copper interconnect paths beyond the 2.5 Gbits/sec previously available, as opposed to having to go to a fiber-optic architecture. The connector uses "fuzzy button" technology (good for 250 mate/demate cycles) and LCP (high-temperature, precision molding material) to hold the buttons, according to Tom Fielding, engineer and marketing manager. "It's existing technology, notched up to meet high-speed requirements," he adds, "and a customer doesn't need to retool, maintaining the installed copper base." Other characteristics include less than 2% crosstalk at 50 psec rise times. Connector-X uses standard FR-4 circuit-board material, cutting product cost.
