Just enough inflation

Tire manufacturer Goodyear and global electronics manufacturer Siemens VDO Automotive have joined forces to develop a passive tire pressure and temperature monitoring/display system for automobiles and light trucks. Announced at the Frankfurt International Motor show in September, the joint development agreement is aimed toward a rapid market entry. Goodyear's expertise in tires, tire pressure monitoring, tire sensors, and tire pressure and temperature interpretation—combined with Siemens VDO's proficiency in electronics, radio frequency, wireless, and vehicle integration technologies—promises rapid development. Focus for the agreement is the U.S.A.'s new Transportation, Recall, Enhancement, Accountability, and Documentation (TREAD) Act. This act requires that all new vehicles, beginning with the 2004 model year, have a system to alert the driver to low air pressure in one or more tires. Both companies anticipate other countries will soon enact similar legislation. The targeted system will be available for industry commercialization worldwide.
