Software recognizes faces
by Bruce Wiebusch, Regional Editor -- Design News, January 7, 2002
FaceIt is a new software program that compares faces in a crowd with a database of criminal mug shots. The software analyzes more than 80 different features on the face. However, some features are more important than others. For example, the size of someone's head is more important than specific features like a nose or a chin. The software can search more than 15 million faces per minute, running on a 500 MHz Pentium III chip. Software developer Visionics (Jersey City, NJ) is perfecting FaceIt for government review. The company is also developing software that enables streaming of images over the Internet from web cameras in airports.
