Los Angeles—The "wow factor" typical of the annual graphics extravaganza called Siggraph moved into the realm of industrial design this year. Visualization system supplier Fakespace Systems (Kitchener, Ontario, Canada) and industrial design/computer graphics developer Alias/Wavefront (Toronto) announced that they will collaborate to provide interactive visualization solutions for users in what Alias/Wavefront calls "virtual environments."

The stereoscopic (3D) viewing feature of Alias/Wavefront's Studio/Tools design software now works with Fakespace's flat wall display, as does a new "Portfolio Wall" product for design review and sharing, employing Fakespace's Portico Work Wall. The Portfolio Wall gives designers a 6- × 7½-ft display of sketches, animations, and 3D models, creating a "digital corkboard."

At the show, Bill Buxton, chief scientist at Alias/Wavefront, demonstrated "virtual tape drawing" for full-scale physical renderings of new car designs. "We believe we have a great opportunity for synergy in combining our companies' efforts to develop intuitive ways for designers and engineers to work with virtual models," Buxton says.
