I-DEAS 6 extends SDRC's VGX(TM) technology from parts to assemblies and includes new functionality and enhancements throughout CAD, CAM, and CAE applications. (VGX, introduced in I-DEAS 5, was this year's Design News Product of the Year.)

Among CAD features are enhancements to variational sweep and generalized draft. Additional engineering analysis capabilities include new section meshing tools for analyzing complex geometry that free users from having to remove or suppress detailed product features. SDRC says users will be able to place a virtual "cargo net" over an entire geometric area that may contain multiple surfaces and features. As they change details of the design, the associative features of the software updates the analysis automatically.

For CAM, I-DEAS Generative Machining(TM) now includes a new flowline machining function, automated hole-making operations, more efficient volume clear, gap handling functions, greater control over toolpath connections, and four new entry and exit functions. "We're now starting to take full advantage of the solid model in the production manufacturing environment," says Bill Carrelli, vice president of marketing.

"Success in today's global marketplace hinges on a company's ability to deliver increasingly complex products to market faster than ever before," says SDRC President and CEO Bill Weyand. "Driven by , these manufacturers are demanding integrated technologies and processes that speed every aspect of product engineering and manufacturing without compromising quality or innovation. It was with these goals in mind that we developed I-DEAS 6."

I-DEAS 6 will be available concurrently on UNIX and NT platforms. Users can choose from nine application sets ranging in price from $5,000 to $30,000, depending on software modules.
