Kyoto, Japan —Wound current collection, a new construction technique employed by Matsushita Electronic Components Co. in their Ultra Power Capacitor (UP-CAP) series, gives several benefits compared to traditional capacitor construction. Most important of these is a lower internal resistance, resulting in higher current, and therefore, higher power.

Storage efficiency of UP-CAP is 95% compared to 80% for conventional capacitors. Axia type terminals facilitate capacitor connection. |
Improved current collection between the internal cell and outside terminal is responsible for UP-CAP's lower resistance. Instead of collecting current through lead wires, UP-CAP collects current through the surface of the electrode's edge, increasing the number of current collection points by a factor of 17.5.

Potential applications for UP-CAP include hybrid cars and pure electric vehicles. |
UP-CAP also compares favorable with batteries. For example, the quick charge and discharge cycle life is extremely long; replacement is unnecessary; and there is no risk of environmental contamination.
Matsushita presently offers two product lines: The UPA series, capable of supplying a small current for a long time, is suited for leveling the electric power produced by photovoltaic power or wind power generation. The UPB series, capable of supplying large current instantly, is targeted for hybrid and electric vehicles.
