Plastic flies to medal
By Design News Staff -- Design News, February 5, 2001
Sydney, Australia —An engineering plastic from RTP Co. (Winona, MN) flew to two medal-winning performances at last summer's Olympics as part of a new discus developed by Danish champ Palle Densam.
Though it has a metal rim and center, the discus body consists mostly of a glass-filled polycarbonate/PBT alloy chosen for its combination of strength and stiffness. The alloy has an unnotched Izod impact strength of 15.0 ft-lb at 1/8 inch and a flexural modulus of 0.49×10 6 psi
At the games, Virgilius Alekna of Lithuania heaved the new discus 69.30 meters to capture the gold, while South Africa's Franz Kruger threw one for a bronze-winning distance of 68.19 meters.
