Newton, MA -With thousands of new websites hitting the Internet daily, finding the information you need to get the job done is getting harder. Search engines, such as Yahoo, Alta Vista, and Lycos, are great for general searching. In fact, our own research shows that many of you consider these search engines extremely valuable. But the specialized information a design engineer needs can be lost in the mass of hits these search engines provide. Then you are forced to search through thousands of links to find those pertinent to your request. And while savvy users can weed through the "miss-hits," that takes precious time.
That's why Design News came up with our own industry-specific search engine. Design News' editors reviewed more than 10,000 websites and compiled a directory of more than 3,100 sites. Following a list of 15 criteria of interest to design engineers, including CAD drawings, product specification sheets, and technical papers, software downloads, catalogs, product information, and ordering; a site had to meet at least four of the criteria to be included in Search Engineer's database.
To use Search Engineer, log on to www.designnews.com, click on the Search Engineer button, and type in your keyword(s). You can refine your search further by clicking on one or more of the 16 categories including aerospace, automotive, CAD/CAM/CAE, fastening, etc. Users can also further clarify their search by selecting one or more of the eight sources such as vendor sites, consultants, publications (including our competing publications), associations, and government agencies.
Use Search Engineer as you would any other search engine. Enter your query in a series of single words or phrases, separated by commas. The search then returns documents with links containing those words and/or phrases. Stemmed or case variations don't matter.
Search Engineer looks through the millions of documents on design engineering specific sites. Each result is a hypertext link to the specific document and not a website's home page.
Search Engineer will be re-indexed on at least a monthly basis to add more valuable sites to the searchable database.
