Merge wire harness design with CAD

Chicago -With the release of SolidWorks®2000 in April, mechanical CAD users are getting new features, more powerful solid modeling computation, simple migration from 2D to 3D, and web collaboration via e-drawings. These features are among the most popular in the industry, but there is also an unexpected gain in the package-EMbassy/Works from Linius®Technologies (Westborough, MA).

Billed as the first single-window, integrated wire-harness design solution, it will allow electromechanical assembly engineers to design wire harnesses without leaving the SolidWorks window. They can also access EMbassy's Designer and Librarian functions.

Users can accomplish all this without having to switch between applications thanks to SolidWorks' (Concord, MA) Gold Partner Program, which certifies a seamless link between programs, says Joe Dunne, the company's field technical manager. SolidWorks' website lists 26 other Gold Partners, including: C-Mold 3D Quickfill, COSMOS/Works, FloWorks, Moldflow Plastics Advisers, PDM/Works, Photoworks, SolidWorks Animator, SolidWorks Piping, and Working Model FEA for SolidWorks.

The new Linius partnership can streamline the electronics design process, because wire harness designers have typically built prototype models, then created specifications from the prototype measurements, says Howard Coltin, Linius' vice president of sales and marketing. This wire harness process has lagged the market trend of 3D modeling because of its complexity, demanding multidiscipline engineers who can perform both electrical and mechanical designs, Coltin says. By removing the physical prototype stage, the process will be faster and more accurate.

Linius released EMbassy 2.5 in December, with improvements such as: bend radius checking on channels, channel snap, embedding dimensions into channels and wires, and putting splices into harnesses. Also new from Linius is HarnessHub. com-a new website designed for data sharing and collaboration among all those involved in the wiring development process, including the design, manufacture, or component and equipment supply of wire harnesses and cables. Through HarnessHub™, all parties can share design files, parts lists, and manufacturing documentation.

This webinar featured research and survey results related to problems associated with preparing CAD geometry for CAE applications.  We discussed how Recipe-Based Automation can help create "just-in-time" CAE-ready geometry each time a cad model is updated. Watch the Presentation

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
