Golden Mousetrap Finalists

Groschopp Inc.

Brushless dc Motor with Flux Ring

Groschopp's latest brushless dc motor, designed for use on a commercial bakery packing machine, achieves Hall-Effect commutation without the use of a costly magnet. Instead of the usual Hall-Effect magnet, which has to be carefully aligned with the main rotor magnet in positioning applications, the new Groschopp design uses a low-cost steel ring as a flux sink to capture the rotor magnet flux, which in turn provides the position feedback for commutation.

MISUMI USA

KUA Single Axis Actuator

The KUA Single Axis Actuator from MISUMI brings together components users formerly had to design from separate components — including ball screws, base and table plates, support units and brackets. KUA actuators, however, come as pre-assembled units constructed around two linear rail guides and driven by either a rolled or precision ball screws. About 1,600 different configurations are possible, but the units still ship in about 11 days with prices starting at $1,073.

Pacific Bearing

Integral V Technology

Integral V technology from Pacific Bearing features more than 20 configurations of linear guides made from aluminum rail with hardened steel raceways. Designed to keep purchase and installation costs low, the Integral V system integrates directly into the aluminum structural framing that's increasingly used for machine bases and on assembly lines. A matching carriage with V-wheels and a wide variety of mounting and t-slot options completes the system. Pacific Bearing reports that the rails hold dimensional tolerances along the entire 20-ft rail length to ±0.001 inch from lot to lot and to ±0.0005 inches within each lot.

Baldor Electric Co.

Quantis Gold Gearmotors

Baldor Electric Co. has developed gearmotor packages that make it easy to pair the company's highest efficiency motors with the appropriate reducer. These Quantis Gold gearmotors are available from 0.5 to 10 hp with gear reducers from 4.28:1 to 302.68:1. The company factory-mounts the motor on the reducer and can deliver the resulting ready-to-install package in as little as one week.

Smalley Steel Ring Co.

Springs Go Metric

The latest Crest-to-Crest Wave Springs from Smalley Steel Ring Co. come in metric sizes from 6 to 60 mm. These spring alternatives develop similar forces to helical compression springs while occupying about half the axial space, making them a good fit for space-constrained applications. What's more, the Crest-to-Crest design features inherently aligned wave peaks, eliminating the need for locating keys or shims between individual springs. Over 3,000 standard springs are available in 17-7 stainless or carbon steel.

Groschopp

Dual Planetary Gearmotor

Groschopp has developed a dual-output permanent magnet DC planetary gearmotor for use on an automated table for orthopedic surgery. It drives two hinged arms, keeping their position aligned and their movements synchronized at all times. But its dual-output design, in which the same PMDC motor drives two planetary speed reducers, does so without the need for chains or belts. This direct drive arrangement not only saved the need for power transmission components but also eliminated the need for a second motor and a more complex control scheme.

Emerson Power Transmission

Unitized Spherical Bearings

Unitized Spherical Roller Bearings from Emerson Power Transmission feature split-housed, double-row design with an integrally sealed, replaceable cartridge insert. The bearings also make use of an adapter mount system that allows for the installation and removal of the bearing from one side. This patented design also provide for +/- 2 degree misalignment and offers two seal choices--felt or contract seal. Applications for the bearings, which are designed to handle combinations of loading conditions, included conveyors for bulk materials.

Groschopp

Redundant PMDC Gearmotor

Groschopp's fractional horsepower permanent magnet DC (PMDC) right angle gearmotor, designed for use in automotive shift-by-wire transmissions, actually incorporates two motors in a shared gear motor assembly. The second motor serves as a backup, in case the primary motor fails to carry out its shifting duties. Under normal operating conditions, the two PMDC motors within the shared motor frame operate independently with their combined outputs driving a common shaft that actuates the transmission shifting. In the event of a motor failure, the second motor ramps up its output so that can handle the shifting alone.

Modern Linear Inc.

No Slide Adjustment Needed

The Vector Trio linear guide system from Modern Linear Inc. features a compliant-rail, design that eliminates the need to adjust the fit of the carriage to the rail. The Vector Trio incorporates standard standard v-groove guide rollers, with three roller fixed to the carriage plate. The carriage plate rides between two hardened steel tracks captured within a u-shaped aluminum extrusion. One of these tracks is fixed in the extrusion, but the other is backed by a rubber cord that gives the track section its compliance, and eliminates the need for adjustments. The Vector Trio comes in three sizes with radial load capacity up to 1382 lbs with rail lengths extending to 12 feet.

Light Matters: The Unsung Heroes of Modern Health Care
First, let's define "no-compromise." In an ideal configuration, this lamp would use a high-brightness LED (HBLED) that is built into a small, integrated package and is able to produce a large quantity of focused light, operate with a high level of reliability and generate no audible noise. Is this difficult? Yes, but it is possible.
