Golden Mousetrap Finalists

National Semiconductor

Microphone Amplifier

National Semiconductor's LMV1088 Noise Suppression Microphone Amplifier is a fully analog dual-input microphone array that delivers background acoustic noise while delivering high-quality speech. Targeted at handsets, power handsets and mobile radios, the LMV1088 consumes just 1 mA, or just one-tenth the power, of comparable DSP and microprocessor software-based systems. The device has two differential input microphone amplifier channels, microphone calibration circuitry and far-field noise suppression processing circuitry.

Fairchild Semiconductor

FAN5355 Buck Converter

Fairchild Semiconductor's FAN5355 is an 800 mA/1,000 mA 3-MHz buck converter equipped with a I2C interface for dynamic voltage scaling. It is designed with a proprietary ultra-fast architecture that consumes very low quiescent current and delivers ultra-fast transient response. Careful optimization of the architecture and drivetrain provides outstanding efficiency at both light and heavy loads.

Fairchild Semiconductor

Green FPS Power Switch

Fairchild Semiconductor's FSFR2100 is an integrated Green FPS Power Switch that increases efficiency and system reliability and reduces valuable design time in resonant converter applications, such as telecom power, high-end audio amplifiers, large laser printers, LCD and PDP TV power supplies. Offering a “system-in-a-package” approach, it integrates everything necessary to build resonant converters. It includes a pulse-frequency-modulation controller with a high-voltage gate driver circuit and two fast-recovery MOSFETs in a thermally efficient 9-SIP package.

National Semiconductor

Analog-to-Digital Converter

National Semiconductor's ADC12EU050 Ultra-Low Power Octal is said to be the industry's first high-speed, continuous-time, sigma delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The ADC12EU050 features 12-bit operation with an alias-free sample bandwidth of 20-25 MHz and a conversion rate of 40-50 mega-samples per sec. It enables manufacturers to extend battery life and reduce heat in portable medical ultrasound and industrial imaging equipment.

Light Matters: The Unsung Heroes of Modern Health Care
First, let's define "no-compromise." In an ideal configuration, this lamp would use a high-brightness LED (HBLED) that is built into a small, integrated package and is able to produce a large quantity of focused light, operate with a high level of reliability and generate no audible noise. Is this difficult? Yes, but it is possible.
