Plastic Bearing Is Eco-Green

Rob Spiegel, Contributing Editor -- Design News, July 13, 2008

Plastic cable producer Igus Inc. has developed a tribologically optimized plastic plain bearing that requires neither oil nor grease as a lubricant. Since they are lubricant-free, no contaminants escape into the environment. The manufacturing of the bearing is also eco-friendly. The amount of oils used in plastics' manufacturing is also very positive in comparison with aluminum and steel production. Energy from 16 quarts of oil is necessary to produce 1 quart of aluminum, 12 quarts for steel. For 1 quart of plastic, only 1.9 quarts of oil is necessary.
