Toshiba’s Long-Life LED Backlighting Systems

Rob Spiegel, Contributing Editor -- Design News, June 23, 2008

Toshiba America Electronics Components Inc. has developed a new color active-matrix thin-film transistor liquid crystal display module lineup for industrial applications that incorporates long-life LED backlighting systems. The modules were designed for a broad range of industrial applications, including test and measuring equipment, medical equipment and portable handheld computing devices.

The LED-based backlighting systems provide an average backlight lifetime of 70,000 hours or approximately 80 years of continuous operation. The systems provide a number of environmentally friendly characteristics. They are low in power consumption and mercury-free. The LED backlight displays also do not require the high-voltage and high-frequency circuits to control luminance, thus enabling a high level of flexibility in system design in terms of safety and electro-magnetic interference compensation.

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
