MSC Simxpert Combines Integrated Solvers with Template Builder
SimXpert intended to assist expert engineering analysts work faster, move seamlessly between disciplines

It’s increasingly common for large organizations to have geographically dispersed development teams working concurrently, but problems can arise if the teams use different tools, especially for a function as critical as simulation. That’s the premise behind SimXpert, the third plank in MSC Software Corp.’s SimEnterprise solutions platform. SimXpert follows enterprise versions of SimDesigner (for CATIA V5), and SimManager.
Leslie Rickey, director of SimXpert product marketing, says the application is intended not only to help expert engineering analysts work faster but also to extend their expertise throughout the enterprise via best practices that foster consistency and, thus, reduce the likelihood that teams will obtain different simulation results.
Features that support faster simulation include a Windows-based, drag-and-drop interface with customizable toolboars; integrated solvers (including Marc, Adams, MD Nastran, and LS-Dyna), and native CAD interoperability (currently just for CATIA), which eliminates the need for data translation. SimXpert also offers workspaces for four simulation disciplines – linear/non-linear structures, motion, thermal, and crash – all of which share a common data model, so analysts can move seamlessly from one discipline to the others.
Analysts with or without programming expertise can use SimTemplate, the best practices authoring tool in SimXpert, to build and run templates that automate a task, or a series of tasks.
Once templates have been created, SimManager can share them with users throughout the enterprise supply chain, including design engineers equipped with SimDesigner. Rickey says the idea is “to drive simulation capabilities further upstream in the product development process.”
MSC has wrapped SimXpert in a support/training package called the Empower Program, which includes instruction on the multi-discipline environment and template creation/execution, as well as on-site tech support and early peeks at additional simulation solutions in development. Rickey says SimXpert was designed for flexibility, so expect support for more CAD systems, simulation disciplines, and solvers.
