ITT Industries, Cannon backs design engineering

by Michelle Stufft, Contributing Editor -- Design News, January 21, 2002

For the second consecutive year, ITT Cannon is donating $10,000 in support of the Design News Engineering Education Foundation.

"Cannon became involved in the program last year," says John Sutherby, director of marketing communications, "when it acquired C&K Components, a three-year sponsor at the time. Cannon is proud to participate in a program that enables engineering talent to improve constantly."

According to Darryll Wilk, vice president and director of sales and marketing, "technical innovation is a necessity." As its tagline "Engineered for Life" suggests, Cannon is focused on developing switch and connector solutions that perform at the highest standard possible for practically every electronic market. "We are engineering driven and have always been known to be technically responsive," Wilk adds.

Cannon has focused on technical growth and "embraced special care of education," according to Alain Janniere, vice president of R&D Worldwide. Education programs have been implemented to provide technical scholarships for employees and their children. "This promotes continuing education both technically and commercially," says Janniere.

Every year in October, Cannon participates in the Taguchi Design of Experiments worldwide program, based on applications, problem solving, and design enhancement. Cannon also recognizes employees for individual achievement and creative teamwork with the annual "Harold S. Green Award," established 23 years ago.

In 2000, the company implemented VBSS, a Value Based Sigma Six program. "This program targets productivity improvement," says Janniere, "and involves comprehensive training incorporating multifunctional teams. The aim is to get more and more robust designs."

Cannon stays abreast of engineering initiatives worldwide and, according to Sutherby, "believes that the Design News Engineering Education Program is a great event to recognize engineering superiority."

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
