Drive Offers Control Flexibility

Single hardware platform offers multiple Ethernet and encoder interface options

Al Presher, Contributing Editor -- Design News, September 10, 2009

Golden Mousetrap 2009 WinnerThe IndraDrive Cs from Bosch Rexroth puts the focus on application flexibility by combining built-in support for a wide range of Ethernet communication protocols, encoder feedback, a drive-based PLC and safety in a compact industrial package.

Use of standard interfaces that provide multiple options for Ethernet networking and encoder feedback allows machine designers to specify different types of Ethernet-based fieldbuses and motor encoder feedback without changes or additional drive hardware. Built-in support for SERCOS III, ProfiNet, EtherNet/IP and EtherCat master communications creates an ability to select among a wide range of control system architectures. The drive's universal multi-encoder interface supports Hiperface®, EnDat 2.1 and 2.2, 1Vss, 5V TTL and Rexroth MSM servo motors.

The IndraDrive Cs can also be equipped with a drive-based PLC, integrating motion and logic using IEC 61131-3 programming standards, as well as Safety On Board capability for drive-based machine safety. Safety functions implemented in the drive provide an extremely fast reaction time, less than 2 msec, for communication with internal monitoring functions.

Integration of motion and I/O control in the drive allows the designer the ability to distribute the intelligence of the control down to the drive, and free up the control to do higher level tasks. With the drive closing the position loops and managing the real-time needs of the motion control system, the main controller can be utilized for automation control and factory network communication functions.

The IndraDrive Cs comes with eight digital inputs, three outputs, an analog input on board and integrated brake resistor. An additional interface can be used for a second encoder and an intelligent operation panel with programming firmware module.  IndraDrive Cs models offer eight power levels ranging from 50W up to 3.5 kW, and maximum current ranges from 3A up to 28A, with a high overload range.

Light Matters: The Unsung Heroes of Modern Health Care
First, let's define "no-compromise." In an ideal configuration, this lamp would use a high-brightness LED (HBLED) that is built into a small, integrated package and is able to produce a large quantity of focused light, operate with a high level of reliability and generate no audible noise. Is this difficult? Yes, but it is possible.
