Gadget Freak Case 147: The Ultimate Universal Remote Control
Design News Staff -- Design News, August 19, 2009
Couch potatoes should be particularly interested in Bill Bowden's remote control IR receiver, which allows users to control the power of virtually any electrical appliance (including those not equipped for remote) using their standard remote control. It's based on an IR receiver circuit, which is basically a simple toggle switch that features a 48KHz IR receiver module to convert IR signals to 5V digital data representing the particular command sent. So switch a fan or lights on and off, blend up a pitcher of margaritas, pop popcorn and more, all without leaving your couch — possibly ever.

Its age old circuit, published several times online and offline,Mr.Bill is fooling the Design News staff and minting money for his old ideas. the title should be "Universal Remote controlled Switch"

I must be one of the lucky ones to get a page with a schematic on it. I guess the CMOS dual D F/F latches the state.
As mentioned, this circuit reacts to any seemingly valid IR signal. The R/S detector does frequency discriminate so it will not respond to you lighting a cigarette, but may turn the lights on/off every time you change the channel. (Looks like he may have a time delay built in so you need a LOOONG signal to make this remote respond).
Single quantities a 4013 goes for 50 cents. For 8 cents more you can get a micro controller that hooks directly to the IR detector output and can be programmed to respond only to certain codes, and respond FAST.

So, Basically... this is an IR version of the "Clapper"...

Can you please post a more clear circuit diagram, like a pdf? The image posted is so blurry I cannot read the pin numbers on the chip.

OK maybe the title is misleading.
The Ultimate Universal Remote Control
could be:
The Ultimate Universal Remote Control-Receiver.
