Improved Two-Stage Pressure Regulator

Advancements provide higher flow in 0 to 20 psig designs, improve design.

Randy Frank, Contributing Editor -- Design News, September 24, 2006

A new two-stage non-relieving diaphragm regulator from Beswick Engineering improves on the company's original two stage diaphragm regulator. The PRD3-ANB-C-DEF pressure regulator has an improved valve design and incorporates larger 10-32 ports for higher flow and easier integration into systems.

Weighing only 50 gm, the regulator is approximately the size of 10 stacked quarters. The regulator uses nested stages to keep the size small. The standard body material is brass with the option of specifying 303 and 316 stainless steel. In addition to the standard body, an optional 10-32 panel mount version is available. Seal and diaphragm choices include standard Buna-N and optional EPDM or Viton.

The units come with outlet pressure ranges of 0 to 5, 0 to 10, and 0 to 20 psi. With wide swings in input pressure, small regulators typical experience droop and rise in the output pressure setting. However, the PRD3's design allows it to maintain a constant output pressure during these input pressure swings. The capability of handling a range of regulated output pressures in a small envelope is attributed to the spring arrangement in the regulator. Additional regulation capability comes from a low-friction sensor and a proprietary valve arrangement.

Well-suited for pressure regulation as low as 1/2 psig, the unit's maximum rated inlet supply pressure is 500 psig. Special options for the regulator include instrument cleaned, no lubrication, Krytox, instrument cleaned with no lubrication, and instrument cleaned with Krytox. Designed for applications with varying input pressures, as well as size and weight restrictions, ideal usage for the regulator is in a gas storage tank where the pressure decreases as the gas is consumed. Target applications for the non-relieving diaphragm regulator include portable fuel cells, unmanned aerial vehicles, instrumentation devices, medical equipment, miniature jet engines, toxic gas detection, ink jet print engines, pharmaceutical machinery and more.

Light Matters: The Unsung Heroes of Modern Health Care
First, let's define "no-compromise." In an ideal configuration, this lamp would use a high-brightness LED (HBLED) that is built into a small, integrated package and is able to produce a large quantity of focused light, operate with a high level of reliability and generate no audible noise. Is this difficult? Yes, but it is possible.
