Gadget Freak Case 140: Security Robot Roams, Shrieks at Intruders
Design News Staff -- Design News, May 18, 2009
Here’s a robot that will roam your home or office seeking intruders. The Searching Security Robot was designed by Ian Smith and his fellow students in a mechatronics’ course at Colorado State University. It sits on motor-powered wheels and its eyes consist of an ultrasonic range finder to keep it from bumping into walls. Once it’s set up, the robot will roam a building seeking moving objects. It has four infrared sensors that detect motion in 360 degrees. When a moving object is detected, the robot sounds its alarm.

The lack of build instructions needs to be fully blamed on design news. They really need to make sure that when a design is submitted, then it needs to be proper. Otherwise, list is a a design "idea". The lack of a schematic and even source code for the pics would me my reason for not accepting this article and previous others for publication.

I clicked on the build instructions but there were not any listed. Just a short description.

Actually it works pretty well, Since I saw it in real life, My brother (Ian) knows what he's doing, and he doesn't need to tell you how to make it either, if your all in college going to school for the same thing he is maybe you should have thought of something "better" to post on this website, don't knock what others are doing that you aren't and didn't think of.

The build instructions are a joke! All I see is a brief, unintelligible description of some of the components. No schemos, drawings, photos, or step-by-step. Not even a crosssection diagram or interconnects. Total waste of space and time. Should this be meant for anyone to have the ability to build, it falls VERY short. Let me know when you decide to give some USEFUL information.

No Schematic, board layout etc. Article doesn't address how it would alert security personel or tie into an existing security system - such as an RF link. Finally, the thing is so loud in it's roaming mode, it would give itself away long before any intruders were detected.
