Anal about backing up and protecting your critical data? Security concerns prevent you from using the network? Have a vivid imagination about the kind of stuff that can go wrong? You could just hand cuff an external hard drive to your wrist. But this unique backup hard drive, designed by a mechanical engineer after he lost a few too many CAD files himself, is much more practical. Plus, it has enough memory to handle even the most bloated of CAD files. The S1 is an external USB 2.0/Firewire hard drive mounted inside a water-proof enclosure built tough enough to survive multiple disaster scenarios. Heat, of course, was a primary concern, says Inventor Robb Moore — in both getting it out and keeping it from getting in. During normal operation, the enclosure's vents provide for forced-air cooling. But should temperatures rise above 250F, plastic tabs on the fireproof vent doors melt, causing the doors to snap shut and secure the contents. Moore says when the enclosure's outer surfaces are exposed to temperatures as high as 1700F, the gypsum-based insulation keeps the inner chamber at 212F for up to an hour. The purchase price of the S1 drive includes the services of an ioSafe disaster recovery team that will retrieve the drive, reclaim your data and return it in a new drive. The S1 is priced at $2,800 to $3,000, depending on storage capacity (80 to 500 Gbytes). For more information, go to http://rbi.ims.ca/4917-637.
