Gadget Freak Case #133: Washing Machine Flood Alert
Design News Staff -- Design News, February 2, 2009
The washing machine at Edward Nauman's house kept overflowing and flooding the floor, so he designed a flood sensor to cut the power to the washing machine if the water in the drain rose within 1.5 inches from the top. The level sensor is mounted in a hole drilled in the drain pipe and the electronics are mounted in a box on the wall next to the power outlet. The box plugs into the wall and the washer plugs into the box. When the water rises to the sensor, a switch in the box cuts the power.

If you have trouble reading the schematic posted here, send your email address to me at: ed.nauman@smartlitez.com
I can send you a BMP, WMF, DWG, or DXF file.

Dave Bassett:
If you could please email regina.lynch@reedbusiness.com (Design News webmaster) she will email you back with an explanation and hopefully a solution to the problems downloading the Word doc.
Thank you

Well here we go again; the word file can not be downloaded. I can not believe a technical magazine can not get a simple file download right. This is............ Assuming that you (the editor) ever get this fixed, I would like to see the result. The parts list does not list any ICs, so I am guessing this is a very simple circuit that uses the leakage current of the sensor to drive a solid state relay. If this is the case, there may be some deterioration of the sensor due to DC current flow. I have had this problem with previous inexpensive units.
I hope you (the editor) eventually learn to fix the file down loading problem. PS, the previous problem was the etch-a-sketch project, that I had to wait almost three weeks for that to be fixed.

i had the same problem with my washing machine, the outlet pipe kept overflowing, i poured sulphuric acid based cleanser down the pipe, bingo, it doesn't overflow anymore, .....needs fixing, not monitoring, good idea though

2. The schematic in the Word document is too small and low resulution, rendering is almost useless.'>1. Allied does not recognize the level sensor part number or show any parts with close number when 'sensor is searched for.
2. The schematic in the Word document is too small and low resulution, rendering is almost useless.
