Power transmission components have taken a new path recently and
emerged as integrated units. These "plug-and-play" modules incorporate
mechanical, electronic, and software technology. This trend has not necessarily
resulted from customers asking for integration, but rather, from companies
enhancing their product offerings while increasing their revenues.
Joyce/Dayton Corp. has introduced the ComDRIVE series, which
consists of a machine screw jack, motor, and gear reducer all in a single unit.
The self-contained actuator packages are capable of powering an entire jacking
system. Advantages include a reduction of the number of required components,
such as couplings and shafts normally required in multi-jack systems.
"It's a win-win situation," says Mike Harris, product manager for
Joyce/Dayton. "It's an opportunity for us to offer our customers a single-source
solution. We know that if a company is buying a lift jack, they are also buying
a motor and probably a gear reducer as well. It's our job to inform the
engineering community that integrated solutions are available," adds Harris.
