iSensor Intelligent Sensor/ADIS16201

Analog Devices Inc

By Design News Staff -- Design News, March 20, 2006

Analog Devices Inc.'s system-in-a-package ADIS16201 iSensor eliminates a key barrier to the advancement of industrial sensor applications ranging from machine vibration detection to motion and positioning measurement. By offering an integrated, pre-calibrated solution, it opens the door for industrial users to install sensors, particularly in low-volume applications where none existed before. "It's more of a standard IC type of interface," notes Bob Scannell, business development manager for Analog Devices. "With this, all of a sudden there's an opportunity to design sensors in where they may have presented a hurdle before."
The ADIS16201 accomplishes that with a patent-pending advanced integration process that embeds a dual-axis MEMS accelerometer, a digital temperature sensor, power management circuitry and embedded firmware on a single chip. As a result, it provides fully calibrated digital outputs for motion and inclination measurements. Embedded signal conditioning and processing eliminates the offset variability of the embedded MEMS sensor, as well as power supply variation. Analog Devices says the device is available in a package that's about 70 percent smaller than existing devices, at a cost that's approximately 10 times lower.
"There's a huge potential for sensors to drive the growth of industrial systems," Scannell says.
"We see this product family making sensors accessible to a whole new class of customers."

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
