Gadget Freak Case 102: Rob's Watching His Truck's Diet

By Design News Staff -- Design News, May 14, 2007

Robert Kwiatkowski designs and deploys data logging systems for Condition Based Maintenance on aircraft carriers. With gasoline prices soaring, he wanted to improve the fuel efficiency of his thirsty truck. As a first step, he's doing some data logging via the OBDII port using this simple interface, a laptop computer and Windmill, a data acquisition application. With post-processing via MS Excel, he can monitor mpg in real time and compare fuels, additives and driving patterns to optimize his mp$ (miles/dollar).

Light Matters: Systems Level Approach to HBLED illumination applications
Its good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires and power driver electronics.
